At a time when many countries in the European Union are exceeding their consumption of the planet’s natural resources, measuring our carbon footprint is becoming increasingly important to our daily lives and businesses.
What is a Carbon Footprint?
Carbon footprint is a term used to measure the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions. The carbon footprint calculation is based on 3 areas:
- Scope 1 – Direct Emissions: Emissions from activities under the full control of the company/organization
- Scope 2 – Indirect emissions: Energy, mainly electricity, consumed within the company/organization
- Scope 3 – Other indirect emissions: refers to emissions from activities that are not under the full control of the company but come from partner organizations (personnel movements, suppliers, etc.).
The new National Climate Change Act requires certain categories of companies to
submit annual reports on their carbon footprint to the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (OFYPEKA).
The Carbon Footprint Report includes the calculation of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions from energy consumption for the year 2022 and should be verified by an officially recognized body. Reducing the carbon footprint is important to reduce the negative impacts of climate change, as increasing greenhouse gas emissions are associated with global warming. Measures to reduce the carbon footprint include:
- the use of sustainable energy sources
- improving energy efficiency
- reducing the footprint of transport
- changing consumption habits towards more sustainable choices.
At CORDIA we undertake the calculations and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and the preparation of a carbon footprint report based on the requirements of ISO 14064-1 and the GHG protocol.
